When to Order Your Safety Cover Before Closing Season

Here's the thing most people don't realize about a safety cover: it isn't sitting on a shelf waiting for you. A real safety cover is custom-built for your exact pool— measured to the inch, then manufactured to fit. That takes lead time. And if you wait until closing season to start the process, you're already behind.

The smart move is simple: get measured in August or early September, so your cover is built and ready the day you close.

Why a custom cover takes time

Every inground pool is a little different — the shape, the steps, the deck, the deep end. A safety cover has to match all of it so the anchors land right and the cover holds weight the way it's supposed to. There is no "one-size" option. We measure your pool, the cover gets made to those measurements, and that build takes weeks, not days.

The steps from measure to install

Here's exactly how it goes, start to finish:

• Measure — we come out and take precise measurements of your pool and deck.
• Quote — we price the cover for your specific pool (every cover is quoted per pool).
• Deposit — you approve the quote and put down a deposit to start the order.
• Order — your measurements go to Latham, who builds the cover.
• Manufacture — the cover is cut, sewn, and assembled to fit your pool. This is the part that eats the calendar.
• Install — once it arrives, we set the anchors and fit the cover.

Add all that up and you can see why starting late is a problem. The build clock doesn't start until the deposit is down — so the sooner you get measured, the sooner your cover is in line.

What happens if you wait too long

Closing season in Oklahoma — roughly October into November — fills up fast, because everyone is racing the first hard freeze. Wait until then to order a cover and two things go wrong:

• The schedule is jammed. Manufacturing and install slots are spoken for. You wait in line behind everyone who planned ahead.
• Your pool sits open. If the cover isn't built when the freeze hits, your pool stays uncovered into the cold — exposed to debris and the first ice instead of sealed up clean.

Neither of those is a good spot to be in. Both are easy to avoid by starting in late summer.
